That does ring some bells for me. My recollection is that there were 2 clients, sisters, bride and bridesmaid, and two (or more) hairdressers were competing to try and get them both to go shorter and shorter. The boyfriend, like you say, was hidden in a cupboard and recording.
It may be a different story, of course, or I might be mixing up bits from two stories.
Bad news is, I’ve no idea what the story was called, who wrote it, or where I read it!
